Why is Aromatherapy so Effective?
I am sure it happens to you that at times you smell something and you will automatically have a memory or emotion entering your mind, so it is easy to understand that aromas can have great impact on our lives. In order to understand how aromatherapy works we must first try to understand a little bit of how our brain works.
Our nose and sense of smell form part of the olfactory system, which is connected to the limbic system. This limbic system is a portion of our brain which is directly associated with memories and our emotions. This means that you can actually stimulate different moods when using the right scent involved.
Memories come popping up in our brain through our five senses, smell being one of them. Whenever you relive one of those memories you are thinking of the things that you have touched, heard, tasted, seen, and of course, smelled. Scents can therefore trigger any memory at any time and place.
Aromatherapy can work on a psychological level, distracting us from our stress, bring back positive memories and thoughts or even treat some emotional imbalances and states. Using aromatherapy in combination with for example massage or similar therapies the positive effect can be even bigger, improving well being and the level of relaxation we experience. Just having a nice relaxing bath with aromatherapy oils can already affect our conscious thoughts and even cause pleasant emotional reactions of happiness and feelings of wellbeing.
Aromatherapy can also influence other systems in our body such as the endocrine or hormonal system, which then in turn will stimulate our nervous system. When stimulating the hormonal system you can influence the level of stress you are experiencing, but also stimulate insulin production and appetite.
Negative emotions like stress can affect our body in a very negative way, causing conditions like headaches, neck strain, anxiety, depression, weight gain (or loss) digestive complaints and many other physical changes. By using the right essential oil you will be capable of reducing all these negative impacts on your body, achieving relaxation and therefore clearing the path to a higher level of wellbeing.
Make sure though that before you start using aromatherapies you talk about it with your healthcare in order to make sure no deeper lying illness is causing your symptoms. Once cleared, you can be on your way to start experiencing for yourself all the wonderful sensations through aromatherapy.
